Dirac Science Library Policies

Remote Storage Policy

Anyone may request that materials be retrieved from remote storage. Users must fill out and submit a remote storage request form, either in house or online. Materials will arrive at the Home location by 5:00 PM the next day, excluding Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays. Patrons will be alerted by e-mail or telephone when the item arrives. Journal requests are held for a maximum of 3 days. Books are held for a maximum of 5 days.

Cellular Phone Use / Electronic Pager Use

Cellular phone use is limited to the exterior lobby of the library. We ask that all patrons place their phones and pagers on silent to prevent disruption in the stacks and study areas of the library.

Damage Policy

When the security exit alarm sounds and the patron has material that is either not charged, non-circulating or is damaged, such as pages torn from a periodical or book, books with all labels and barcodes torn out, etc., FSU Police will be called.

Excessive Noise

Because the library is a place for research and study, our patrons are asked to reduce the level of noise caused by radios, walkman, and other intrusive sound that is disruptive to other patrons and that earphones be used. We ask that noise be kept at a personal level in all places including restrooms.

Faculty / Graduate Carrels

Locked carrels are available for FSU Faculty and doctoral candidates who are writing dissertations. Assignments are on a first come/first serve basis for a maximum of two consecutive semesters. Applications for carrels are turned in at the circulation desk and reviewed for approval by the Department Head. Upon approval the key may be picked up at the circulation desk. Lost or missing keys are to be reported immediately. All library materials left in the carrel must be checked out.

Food and Drinks

Food and drinks may be consumed in the courtyard outside Dirac. This is a precautionary measure taken to preserve and protect our materials from damage due to food, drinks, and/or bugs and insects attracted by said food and drink.

Gifts / Donations

All donors will be given a Gift Information Slip to complete which will be initialed and dated by the staff member who receives the materials. These materials are reviewed by the Department Head. Gifts are forwarded to the Collection Development Department for further review and processing. All donations become property of the University Libraries.

See Gifts Policies, Collection Development Department.

Group Studying

Groups studying, other than in the designated study rooms on the third floor, are asked to congregate on the second floor (the main floor of the building). The first and third floors are designated exceptionally quiet study areas.

Lost and Found

Lost and found materials are turned in at the Circulation Desk. Items which have a value of over $50.00 or contain items such as cash, credit cards, driver's license or checkbooks are kept in the safe until FSU Police arrive. All other materials will be held for approximately one week, at which time they are inventoried and turned over to the University "Lost and Found" located in the Student Union Information Center. FSU ID cards are turned in to the Circulation Desk. The cards are returned to the patron or picked up by the FSU Card Center Staff.

Posting of Announcements / Solicitation

Approved advertisements for FSU sponsored events will be placed on bulletin boards in the building. Posters or announcements are to be placed on the notice board located on the south side of the library near the Paul A.M. Dirac statue. University policy prohibits solicitation in any form, either in the library or on campus.

See Florida Administrative Code 6C-9.06

Shoes and Shirt

Shoes and shirt are required at all times while inside the library. Patrons are expected to have a courteous and professional attitude when inside the library. While there is no dress code, socially accepted standards are expected.

Study Rooms

The two study rooms located on the third floor of the library are available to patrons on a first come first serve basis. Maximum capacity for these rooms is four people per room.

Taking Photographs or Videos in the Libraries

Taking photographs or videos in the library buildings must be approved by the University Libraries' Administrative Office. Photographing library users may only be done with permission from the patron.

Tobacco Products

Concurrent with the Florida Clean Indoor Air Act of 1992, all buildings at Florida State University are designated non-smoking and prohibit the use of any tobacco products (i.e. cigarettes, dip, chewing tobacco, cigars, etc.) inside.
