Each of these brown-bag luncheons will be in the Media Center at the Robert M. Strozier Library, on the FSU campus. Feel free to bring a sandwich, yogurt, or whatever; we will furnish ice, sodas, and of course cookies. Speaking of dessert, remember that Q&A will follow each of these informal presentations.

    "The Book I Did Write About This Place: Green Empire"
    by June WIAZ,
    co-author (with Kathryn Ziewitz) of Green Empire: The St. Joe Company and the Remaking of Florida's Panhandle, published in Spring '004 by the University Press of Florida.
  • Wednesday, October 20, 12:30-1:45 p.m.:
    "Fighting Nazis and Terrorists: American Traditions of Civil Liberties and National Security in Conflict"
    by Max Paul FRIEDMAN,
    History professor at FSU and author of Nazis and Good Neighbors: The U.S. Campaign Against the Germans of Latin America in WWII (Cambridge U.P., '003). He has recently returned from Germany, where he was 2003-'004 Juergen Heideking Fellow at the German Historical Institute in Cologne.

    "A SPECIAL TREAT: A READING BY ERIN BELIEU"
    Continuing a tradition dating to the mid-'90s, of having one reading each year by a faculty member from FSU's creative-writing program, we welcome poet Erin Belieu.

    world-travelling Professor of Journalism at Florida A& M University and, since 1990, holder of the Knight Chair for Journalism Student Enhancement.

    "The Book I Could Write About This Place"
    by Judge James JOANOS,
    of Tallahassee, who retired in 2001 as Appellate Judge, Florida First District Court of Appeal. Fans of this brown-bag series will recognize Judge Joanos's title, not only from our September '004 talk but also from presentations by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lucy Morgan (December '98) and novelist/journalist Shirish Date (our annual dinner, April '001).

    "What's Up With 'Freshman Reading Groups' These Days?"
    by Greg BEAUMONT,
    raconteur and Associate Dean and Director, FSU's Office of Undergraduate Studies.
