Introduction

This research guide is intended for both undergraduate and graduate students studying art history.

This guide focuses on general reference books, journals, and online resources available at the FSU Libraries. It also includes relevant Library of Congress classifications and subject headings to help researchers locate additional materials.


Finding Articles

Major Databases and Indexes

Art Index Retrospective is a bibliographic database that cumulates citations to Art Index volumes 1-32 of the printed index published between 1929-1984. Art Full Text is a bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts articles from periodicals published throughout the world. Full-text coverage for selected periodicals is also included. In addition to articles, Art Full Text indexes reproductions of works of art that appear in indexed periodicals.
  • ARTbibliographies Modern (1969-present) STROZIER Reference Z5935.A7
Indexes and abstracts journal articles, books, dissertations and exhibition catalogs. It covers a wide variety of types of art, including ceramics, video art, body art, and installation works.
A multidisciplinary database indexing more than 1,100 arts and humanities journals as well as relevant references from over 6,800 science and social sciences periodicals.
Contains records describing articles in over 1,000 architectural periodicals in the fields of architecture and related disciplines. Print version: Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals (1876-1976) STROZIER Reference Z5945 .C653 1973.
Contains records from more than 3,000 journals, books, dissertations, and other American and European sources covering the humanities, social sciences, and economics. FRANCIS is strong in religion, the history of art, psychology, and literature.
Provides Web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art (1996, 34 vols.) with constant additions of new material and updates to the text, plus extensive image links.

Related Databases and Indexes

An index to more than 12.7 million biographical sketches in over 3400 volumes and editions of current and retrospective reference books, covering both contemporary and historical figures throughout the world.
Cites more than 2,700 periodicals and 1,800 books, including individual and collective biographies. Biographical subjects indexed range from antiquity to the present and represent all fields and nationalities. Print version: Biography Index (1946-1998) STROZIER Reference Z5301 B5
Comprehensive database of biographical information on more than one million people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas.
  • Index to Art Periodicals STROZIER Oversize Z5937.C55
An 11-volume subject index covering 1907-1974 but omitting journals indexed in Art Index.
Index to art periodicals that were published in the United States during the 19th century. The journal contents are indexed, including articles, art notes, illustrations, stories, poems, and advertisements.
  • Original Index to Art Periodicals STROZIER Oversize Z5937 F74 1983
A title index to art periodicals articles published between the 1850s and 1960s. Eighty-four periodicals were indexed.
Describes art auction and rare book catalogs for sales from the late sixteenth century to scheduled auctions not yet held.

Finding Books & Media

Books and media resources about art history can be found in two main ways: by searching the online FSU Library Catalog and by browsing the aisles at Strozier.

When searching the online catalog, a basic search will let you search by keyword, title, author, subject or call number. An advanced search will let you search by a combination of these fields, as well as by format, language, location, and date. Searching by the subject headings listed below may also be helpful.

When browsing the aisles, the majority of books on art history will be on the fourth floor, while the media resources will be on the ground floor in the Digital Media Center. The Library of Congress classifications listed below may be helpful when browsing the aisles.

Library of Congress Classifications

The following Library of Congress classifications may be useful when browsing the shelves at Strozier Library for additional materials on art history. The majority of the 'N's are on the fourth floor. Additional materials (such as government documents, micromaterials, media, and reference books) may be found on the ground floor and the first (main) floor.

The following subject headings may be useful when browsing the online FSU Library Catalog. To browse by subject heading, select Subject from the Browse Organized Lists drop-down menu, type the subject heading in the search box, then click the Go box.

General Reference Works

When an item's location line reads STROZIER Reference, then the item is located on the first (main) floor of Strozier Library and can only be used in the library. When an item's location line reads STROZIER Documents, then the item is located on the ground floor. When an item's location line reads STROZIER Ready Reference, then the item is located at the first (main) floor reference desk.

  • Encyclopedia of World Art 1959-68 STROZIER Reference N31 E533
A 15-volume encyclopedia containing long, scholarly articles, each with a bibliography. The set is illustrated with numerous full-page plates, many in color. Covers the representational arts worldwide from prehistory to present.

Dictionaries

  • The Adeline Art Dictionary STROZIER Reference N33 A223 1966
Includes architectural terms and numerous clear illustrations.
  • Glossary of Art, Architecture and Design since 1945 STROZIER Reference N34 W34 1977
Terms and labels describing movements, styles and groups derived from the vocabulary of artists and critics.

Selective annual bibliography of books and articles in major languages covering the history of art from 500 A.D. to 1850. The library has 1967-1971, 1973-1976, and 1978-1983.

Biographies

  • Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenden Kunstler von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart STROZIER Reference N40.T4.
The 37 volumes of this standard source were published 1907-1950, in German. A supplement (1953-1962) is also in STROZIER Reference, N40.V6.
  • Art Books: A Basic Bibliography of Monographs on Artists STROZIER Reference N40.F73 1997
Artists from many historical periods and countries are included.
  • Index to Artistic Biography STROZIER Reference N40.H38
The original two volumes (1973) and the 1981 and 2002 supplements index books published in the 20th century, mostly in English. Lists thousands of artists, including the less well-known.

Covers doctoral dissertations completed in the U.S. at accredited institutions for the last 150 years. Includes some master’s theses and foreign language dissertations. Dissertations completed since 1997 are available in fulltext.

Contains over 50 million bibliographic records for books, journals, media, and other materials in libraries worldwide.
A comprehensive database that serves as a major union catalog of records describing books, serials, archival collections, manuscripts, maps, musical scores, sound recordings, films, photographs, posters, computer files, electronic resources and more. One thousand black and white fiche containing photographs of French art, a part of the Marburger Index.

Also, a user’s manual is in the Strozier basement, Row 6, Micr Z5961 G4 M37 1984. The microfiche contain the photographic archives of the Bildarchiv Foto Marburg and the Reinisches Bildarchiv Koln. Covers architecture in Germany plus painting, sculpture, decorative and applied art dating from the Middle Ages to modern times in German collections.
