This research guide is intended for both undergraduate and graduate students studying art therapy.

This guide focuses on general reference books, journals, and online resources available at the FSU Libraries. It also includes relevant Library of Congress classifications and subject headings to help researchers locate additional materials.



Finding Articles

Databases and Indexes

Art Index Retrospective is a bibliographic database that cumulates citations to Art Index volumes 1-32 of the printed index published between 1929-1984. Art Full Text is a bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts articles from periodicals published throughout the world. Full-text coverage for selected periodicals is also included. In addition to articles, Art Full Text indexes reproductions of works of art that appear in indexed periodicals.

Indexes and abstracts journal articles, books, dissertations and exhibition catalogs. It covers a wide variety of types of art, including ceramics, video art, body art, and installation works.
A multidisciplinary database indexing more than 1,100 arts and humanities journals as well as relevant references from over 6,800 science and social sciences periodicals.
An indexing and abstracting tool covering health, social services, psychology, sociology, economics, politics, race relations and education. ASSIA currently contains over 375,000 records from over 500 journals published in 16 different countries, including the UK and US.
This is the world’s most comprehensive source of full text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 337 of the 3,024 journals indexed in CIHAHL. In addition, this database offers access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters.

U.S Department of Education sponsored index to 300+ education journals, unpublished documents, books, conference papers, research reports, grant proposals, and hard-to-locate research.
Use this Resource Center to find magazines, journals, newspapers, definitions, directories, and information on: Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, Prescription Drugs, Herbal remedies, and alternative or complementary treatments, etc.
A database of the back issues of core journals in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. The gap between the most recently published issue of any journal and the date of the most recent issue available in JSTOR is from 2 to 5 years.
Covers all areas of medicine, including clinical medicine, experimental medicine, dentistry, nursing, health services administration, nutrition, and much more. For 1965-present coverage, use MEDLINE (FirstSearch) database.
Provides indexed and abstracted records with accompanying full text from over 1300 periodicals from H.W. Wilson General Science Abstracts, Humanities Abstracts, Readers' Guide Abstracts, and Wilson Business Abstracts, and many other Wilson databases. Coverage is from 1994- present. Indexing begins in 1982, abstracts in 1984, and full-text coverage in 1994. Each database has its own start dates for indexing, abstracting, and full text; start dates for full-text rights to individual journals vary within a database.
Covers journal articles, book chapters, books, technical reports, and dissertations in psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines.
The electronic full text version of approximately 650 traditional research journals published by Elsevier and Academic Press. These journals are primarily in the scientific, technical, and medical disciplines.
A multidisciplinary index, with searchable author abstracts, covering the journal literature of the social sciences. Includes cited reference searching.
Covers some 350 core periodicals in the fields of anthropology, economics, geography, law and criminology, political science, social work, sociology, and international relations.
Provides bibliographic coverage of current research focused on social work, human services, and related areas, including social welfare, social policy, and community development.
An electronic journal service with over 410 full text electronic journals published by Springer. The journals are searchable and browsable by author, title, topic or individual issue.

Finding Books & Media

Books and media resources about art therapy can be found in two main ways: by searching the online FSU Library Catalog and by browsing the aisles at Strozier and Dirac libraries.

When searching the online catalog, a basic search will let you search by keyword, title, author, subject or call number. An advanced search will let you search by a combination of these fields, as well as by format, language, location, and date. Searching by the subject headings listed below may also be helpful.

When browsing the aisles, the majority of books on art therapy will be on the first floor of Dirac Science Library. The Library of Congress classifications listed below may be helpful when browsing the aisles.

Library of Congress Classifications

The following Library of Congress classifications may be useful when browsing the shelves at Strozier and Dirac libraries for additional materials on art therapy. The majority of the 'N's are on the fourth floor of Strozier Library, and the majority of the 'RC's are on the first floor of Dirac Science Library. Additional materials (such as government documents, micromaterials, and media) may be found on the ground floor of Strozier.

General Reference Works

When an item's location line reads STROZIER Reference, then the item is located on the first (main) floor of Strozier Library and can only be used in Strozier. When an item's location line reads STROZIER Ready Reference, then the item is located at the first (main) floor Strozier reference desk. When an item's location line reads DIRAC SCIENCE Reference Documents, then the item is located on the second (main) floor of Dirac Science Library and can only be used in Dirac.
