Introduction

This research guide is intended for both undergraduate and graduate students studying social work.

This guide focuses on general reference books, journals, and online resources available at the FSU Libraries. It also includes relevant Library of Congress classifications and subject headings to help researchers locate additional materials.


Finding Articles

Major Databases and Indexes

Includes the Social, Psychological, Educational, and Criminological Trials Register (CS-SPECTR) and the Register of C2 Systematic Reviews of Interventions and Policy Evaluation (C2-RIPE)
Prepares full-text systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare
Covers journal articles, book chapters, books, technical reports, and dissertations in psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines.
Provides bibliographic coverage on current research focused on social work, human services, and related areas, including social welfare, social policy, and community development. (1980 to present)
A multidisciplinary index, with searchable author abstracts, covering the journal literature of the social sciences. It indexes more than 1,725 journals spanning 50 disciplines, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 3,300 of the world's leading scientific and technical journals.
(Changed to H.W. Wilson January 2004) Covers some 350 core periodicals in the fields of anthropology, economics, geography, law and criminology, political science, social work, sociology, and international relations from 1983-Abstracting coverage begins with periodicals published in January 1994. Abstracts range from 50 to 300 words and describe the content and scope of the source articles. Full text coverage begins in January 1995. SocINDEX with Full Text is the world's most comprehensive and highest quality sociology research database. The database features more than 1,600,000 records with subject headings from a 15,600 term sociological thesaurus designed by subject experts and expert lexicographers. SocINDEX with Full Text contains full text for 253 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895, and 72 "priority" coverage journals. This database also includes full text for 547 books and monographs, and full text for 6,711 conference papers.

CINAHL Plus With Full Text provides indexing for 3,024 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health, with indexing back to 1937. CINAH Plus with Full Text also contains searchable cited references for more than 1,160 journals and provides full text for hundreds of journals, plus legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials. PDF backfiles to 1937 are also included.
Provides in-depth, unbiased reports on current events and topics of current interest. Each report provides historical background on the topic, outside commentary, pro/con arguments, chronological information, and a substantial bibliography. CQ Researcher addresses a wide range of topics including legal, political, and social issues, communication and mass media, health, education, science, and technology. Coverage is from 1923 to the present.

Covers crime trends, crime prevention and deterrence, juvenile delinquency, juvenile justice, police, courts, punishment and sentencing. Produced by the U.S. Administration on Aging. The Eldercare Locator connects older Americans and their caregivers with sources of information on senior services.
Provides pricing information for the 100 most commonly used prescription drugs in Florida.

Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research maintains and provides access to a vast archive of social science data for research and instruction since 1962.
Provides more than 9.5 million documents from over 18,300 sources. Lexis-Nexis Universe provides access to company profiles and financial reports, government transcripts, trade journals and academic and legal databases. Their files are updated with full-text documents from general interest wire services, newspapers, and magazines from around the world.
Furnishes researchers to access of vast and varied information published by and about Congress.
Appropriate for this guide is the access to state and federal statistics. Provides some full-text and links and serves as an index to full-text data on microfiche in STROZIER Documents Mif ASI and SRI. A companion database to CINAHL, Pre-CINAHL is intended to provide current awareness of new journal articles, and includes a rotating file of limited bibliographic information (no subject searching), which is available to researchers only for the time when these articles are being assigned additional indexing.

Finding Books & Media

Books and media resources about social work can be found in two main ways: by searching the online FSU Library Catalog and by browsing the aisles at Strozier.

When searching the online catalog, a basic search will let you search by keyword, title, author, subject or call number. An advanced search will let you search by a combination of these fields, as well as by format, language, location, and date. Searching by the subject headings listed below may also be helpful.

When browsing the aisles, the majority of books on social work will be on the third and fourth floors, while the media resources will be on the ground floor in the Digital Media Center. The Library of Congress classifications listed below may be helpful when browsing the aisles.

Library of Congress Classifications

The following Library of Congress classifications may be useful when browsing the shelves at Strozier Library for additional materials on social work. The majority of the 'H's are on the third and fourth floors. Additional materials (such as government documents, micromaterials, media, and reference books) may be found on the ground floor and the first (main) floor.

General Reference Works

When an item's location line reads STROZIER Reference, then the item is located on the first (main) floor of Strozier Library and can only be used in the library. When an item's location line reads STROZIER Documents, then the item is located on the ground floor. When an item's location line reads STROZIER Ready Reference, then the item is located at the first (main) floor reference desk.
