"Getting Started" Subject Pages
The following pages provide "jumping off points" for research in a specific area(s) related to this class:
Finding books, videos, and more in the library catalog
By searching the library catalog, you search stuff that is available in one of our libraries on the shelf.
Finding scholarly journal articles
These are places you can go to find scholarly journal articles. Look especially for tabs or icons that indicate the content is "peer-reviewed."
- Social Citation Index: Remember to UN-check the Science and Arts and Humanities Index before searching.
- Google Scholar: Great place to get ideas - or when you are stuck . . . just be careful: not everything is from a peer-reviewed journal!
- Academic Search Complete: Good for general searches at the beginning - not as good for more specific, detailed topics.
Finding recent info (e.g. newspapers, etc.)
Sometimes, you may have a topic or issue for which you need recent news coverage. (Many recent topics are not covered in scholarly journals if they have happened in the last 2-3 years because of the long publication cycle of scholarly journals.)
- Lexis Nexis : Click on "NEWS" tab.
- Access World News : World Newspapers
Researching laws and legal info
As part of this course, you may have to research a specific law or case. The resources below are well-suited for this, but can be difficult to use (even for librarians). Please request help and we can try to find an answer to your question(s).
- Lexis Nexis : Select the "legal" tab
Government Documents
All government document sites are located at http://www.lib.fsu.edu/find/documents . You may browse federal, state, and international doc sources.
