Special Borrowing Permits

Special Borrowing Permits for the Strozier, Dirac, and Engineering libraries are available to visiting scholars and researchers affiliated with an FSU department. Permits are also granted to Florida State University OPS staff and staff and students in FSU affiliated programs. Applications are located on the University Libraries website and must be submitted to the service desks at either Strozier or Dirac libraries. Supporting documentation, such as an official letter from the applicant’s employer or a letter of reference from an FSU academic department, must be attached to the application.

Alumni, members of the general public, and other guests, can obtain borrowing privileges through joining Friends of the Library. Special Borrowing Permits are non-transferable and valid for 6 months. Upon expiration, the borrower may renew provided:

  1. A definite need still exists.
  2. There are no library charges against the holder.
  3. The patron has complied with library regulations.

Decisions may be appealed to the Head of Collections Access.

Special Borrowers are allowed to check out 30 books at a time for three weeks, and may renew materials online up to three times. Special Borrowers may not check out periodicals or videos. Interlibrary Loan and remote access to databases are not available to Special Borrowers. Special Borrowers are subject to the circulation policies of the University Libraries.
