Where can I view micromaterials?

Micromaterial viewers are located on the Ground Floor of Strozier Library. Micromaterial can be viewed, printed, saved, or burned to CD-R. If you require additional assistance with Micromaterials or viewing, please visit the Help Desk located on the Ground Floor.

Overview

Loading Material

  1. Turn on Scanner - switch on the bottom left front of the machine
  2. Turn on Computer - log on with username "student" and no password
  3. Load film or fiche:
  4. Film

    1. Pull carrier to front, using the handle on the right side of the scanner. You may have to move the microfiche (left) handle to the left first
    2. Load film onto open spool arm with film coming from top of roll
    3. Pull film to the roller located next to the blue button. Slide the film under the roller to the glass
    4. Push back on the blue button to the left and hold it until film is loaded onto the take-up reel
    5. Use the handle to move the film under the lens and over the light
    6. Move forward and backward in film by using the control knob

    Fiche

    1. Push microfilm carrier to the back, if necessary, using the right handle
    2. Pull glass plate to front and forward till glass opens
    3. Put fiche in face down top facing back
    4. Push glass plate back und glass closed
    5. Move under the lens

Manipulating Images

Scanning to Page

  1. From computer desktop open (double click) Capture Perfect
  2. Click File - Scan to Page
  3. Wait for the scanner to scan the document
  4. Make sure image is correct and in focus; if not, then adjust settings (see next page) and rescan
  5. Be sure to check your image with the magnifying glass tool before saving

Saving Images

At this point, you can choose saving to the hard drive (for burning later to CD) or saving to a USB drive

  1. (Extra step for saving to a jump drive) Insert the jump drive into the USB port on the front of the PC (behind the PC case door with the Dell logo on it)
  2. Click File - Save As
  3. There is a Microfilm Folders folder on the desktop. You can save images to this folder, or create your own folder inside this folder
  4. Repeat with next image

Scanning to Batch

  1. From computer desktop open (double click) Capture Perfect
  2. Click File - Scan to Batch
  3. When prompted, specify where to save the document, only to the hard drive or a "jump" drive. (Note: cannot save directly to CD!)
  4. If checked, uncheck Pages to Scan
  5. Wait for the scanner to scan the page
  6. Choose Continue Scanning (or the green button) for each additional page
  7. At the end of the document, choose Stop Scanning (or the red button then Stop Scanning) to save the entire document
  8. If this is not selected, only the last page of the document will be saved!

Please Note: Images on the hard drive will held for 60 days, then deleted.

Burning Files to CD-R

  1. Double-click on the Easy CD Creator icon
  2. The upper half of the Roxio screen is the Source section (your files); the lower half is the Project section (what will go on the CD). You move files to the CD project by either of two methods:
    • Drag-and-drop files from the source section to the project section
    • Select the files in the source section, then click on the Add button
  3. The project size bar at the bottom of the screen shows the used and free space on your proposed CD project, so you can get the maximum number of files onto your CD when you bum it
  4. Press the red Record button on the middle right side of the screen
  5. Click Start Recording
  6. When the recorder is finished, you have a CD of your image files
