PEN and Inc., University Library’s digital project incubator, graduates first class

Thursday, November 3, 2016

The Office of Digital Research and Scholarship has completed its first iteration of the Project Enhancement Network and Incubator (PEN & Inc.) This 7-week, structured program took the participants through phases of project planning and development. The incubator was a dedicated space and time to explore the issues related to doing digital scholarship projects, including copyrights/risk assessment, tools, infrastructure and methodologies, strategic collaborative partnerships, and more.

The program was completed by three graduate students and a faculty member. Rachel Duke (PhD candidate, English) began development on a project that will collect, analyze, and disseminate data related to medieval religious women. Melissa Hughes (PhD candidate, History; MA student in Digital Humanities) is working on a digital dissertation on the Roma, with supplemental maps, visualizations, and pedagogical materials. Zach Stoltzfus (PhD candidate, History) created a plan for collecting data on the political, institutional, and geographical affiliations of notables during the French Revolution. Tanya Peres (associate professor, Anthropology) developed a method and controlled vocabulary for curating citations and bibliographic records about research in the field of Southeastern Zooarchaeology.

The Office of Digital Research and Scholarship is now accepting applications for the second incubator cohort. This program is open to all members of the Florida State community who are looking to develop or accelerate a digital research project. Throughout PEN & Inc., researchers will work together in a cohort and exchange ideas about digital projects and digital scholarship more broadly. Topics covered will include: talking about your research to a wider audience, project sustainability, and valuation of digital research in fields that privilege written work.
