Alternative Textbook Grants FAQ

Who is eligible to apply for an Alternative Textbook Grant?

FSU faculty, post-docs, researchers, and graduate students who are currently teaching or designing a course are eligible to apply for Alternative Textbook Grants. Grant winners and applicants from previous years are encouraged to reapply for new courses.

How many grants are available?

(10) grants of $1000 are available for disbursement during the fiscal year. Once the fund is exhausted within a given fiscal year, further applications will not be accepted until the beginning of the next fiscal year.

What counts as alternative materials to replace my required course materials?

Alternative materials should be no cost to the students which can include open textbooks (including texts found on OpenStax or the Open Textbook Library), open educational resources (including materials from the OER Commons or freely available online), or library-licensed materials (including journal articles, streaming video, or eBooks). Instructor-created materials such as formatted lecture notes and self-published open textbooks or OER are also encouraged as adopted alternative materials.

Will the Libraries purchase eBooks to be used as required course materials?

Grants are available as purchases of eBooks to be adopted as course textbooks and purchased as part of the FSU Libraries collection with unlimited user licenses. Not all eBooks will be available for purchase and are subject to availability. You can learn more about some of the challenges libraries face in providing access to traditional textbooks here

How do I apply for funds?

Review the requirements for applicants on the Alternative Textbook Grants page. For main campus applicants, fill out this Main Campus Application Form. For International Programs applicants, fill out this International Programs Application Form

At what point should I apply for funds?

You can apply for funds for a newly designed course or a course that you have taught for many years. You should apply 1 - 3 semesters before you plan to teach the course.
