Metadata and Discovery Services

The Metadata and Discovery Services Department provide accurate and sufficient metadata so that users can find, identify, select, and access library resources. We connect users with the FSU community & beyond to FSU’s rich resources. We also share expertise in metadata and description to strengthen discovery within and across systems.

Definitions: Metadata includes MARC and non-MARC metadata schema, this better reflects the nature of our work and the needs of the Libraries. Discovery denotes the connection between our work with metadata and the ultimate goal of enhancing and supporting the discovery of resources.

Original Cataloging

  • Special Collections materials (rare books, manuscripts, maps, archives)
  • Foreign Language materials
  • Original records for new general collections materials (when otherwise unavailable in OCLC or from outsourced options)
  • Authorities work

Complex adaptive cataloging

  • Enhancement and update of copy cataloged records when needed

DigiNole metadata support

  • Metadata project support for the Digital Library and Institutional Repository
  • Metadata remediation support

Metadata maintenance & migration

  • Withdrawal projects
  • Migration from Aleph to Sierra
  • Data Remediation ((ETDs in Catalog, ILS migration, other)
  • Data migration projects

Metadata reporting and visualization

  • Provide statistical reporting on collections data (i.e. ARL, IPEDS, etc.)
  • Create reports and visualizations to help community better understand metadata needs, issues, projects, purposes

Collaborations with other units and support for metadata needs

  • Metadata and Discovery services regularly collaborates with and provides workflow support to other units, including but not limited to Serials, Acquisitions, E-Resources, Collections Access, Digital Research and Scholarship, and the Digital Library Center

Metadata consultations and shared expertise

  • Provide metadata consultations and support to other campus libraries and other entities (faculty, staff, students) on projects and specialized materials

Priority Processing Service

The department offers Priority Processing for requesting materials that appear in the catalog as RECEIVED but are not yet available to the public. Once the request is made for Priority Processing, the material will be available within 3 working days.
