Introducing the R&D Commons

Thursday, July 6, 2017

The R&D Commons is newly repurposed area in the northwest corner of the lower level of Strozier library, nestled behind the closed double doors. Comprising of an open/common area, a conference room, and the offices of our digital, technology, and development teams, the R&D Commons is primarily a co-working and training space for the Office of Digital Research and Scholarship (DRS). The space serves many purposes, including: a collaborative work environment for project teams, event space for lectures and discussions, and a "bring your own device" training and consultation lab.

Regular events in the R&D Commons
What When Where
Tableau Tuesdays 3-5p weekly on Tuesday Conference room
Percolator (digital skills training) 3-5p weekly on Wednesday Common area

This fall the R&D Commons will be regularly used for trainings from our academic publishing and digital humanities librarians, with sessions like Python for Beginners and Utilizing ORCID, the Open Researcher and Contributor ID.

We will also offer a new series on introductory data processing like efficiency in data cleaning and software like SPSS. As the libraries invests in providing support and expertise in the area of digital pedagogy, we plan to host several open discussions about teaching praxis in a digital age.

All events will be available on the FSU calendar and on the DRS website. Scheduled meetings/events in the R&D Commons are typically held between 9a-6p M-F. The space will be open for quiet study after 6p.
