COMING SOON: 2018 FSU Digital Scholarship Colloquium

Wednesday, January 31, 2018
Dr. Cheryl Ball

Florida State University Libraries will host a series of events Feb. 15-16 to educate the campus community about digital academic publishing.

The events will feature Cheryl E. Ball, director of the digital publishing collective at Wayne State University and an expert on scholarly communication, digital publishing infrastructure, open access and more.

The schedule of events is:

Thursday, Feb. 15

·       2018 FSU Digital Scholarship Colloquium
Noon to 5 p.m., Dirac Library, Room 216

The event will foster conversation among attendees centering around the growth of digital publication formats in the academic landscape and the impact these new publication avenues have on scholarly production. Ball will serve as the guest speaker.

Thursday, Feb. 16

·      Introduction of Vega, a new multimedia-friendly academic publication platform
9:30 to 11 a.m., HCB 313

Ball will introduce Vega, an open-source publishing software platform that offers a range of customizable features and workflows to interact with data, multimedia and text and takes editorial management and academic publishing into the 21st century. The software allows scholars across different disciplines and knowledge domains to collaborate and engage in building media-rich interdisciplinary possibilities in scholarly, open-access publishing. Vega provides authors, editors and publishers the ability to integrate basic multimedia content into their publications — something other open-access academic publishing systems lack — and gives users complete control over editorial workflows, peer review processes and program features.

·       “The Rigors of Peer-Review in OA Publishing Environments” with Cheryl Ball
2:30 p.m., Strozier Library, lower level, Research and Development Commons

Events are free and open to the public, and anyone interested in scholarly publishing, multimedia scholarship and the future of authorship and editorial work is encouraged to attend.
